Battery Safety:

The use of lithium and solid state batteries is set to increase enormously in the marine sector, both on pleasure and
commercial vessels. These batteries are a great way to store large amounts of energy within a very small space.
However they bring new hazards. These hazards need to be clearly understood, so that mitigating measures
and safe working practicies and installation design regulations can be put in place.

I am part of an IMarEST special interest group (SIG) which is looking into the issues surrounding the use of lithium and
solid state batteries aboard ships, as auxliary power, UPS, and propulsion systems. I become intrested as a marine
accident investigator and engineering surveyor, and have come into contact with a number of experts involved in research
and safety testing in this field over the last few years. The SIGs, aim will be to update current guidelines for authorities such
DNV,ICAS,UKMCA etc, by consolidating known best practice and current understanding of the risks.
We hope to establish full scale safety testing goals, like UL 9540A for land based BESS sites in the USA and Canada,
leading to safe installation design regulations for the marine industry at an international level. 

Training and education will also form a large part of managing the risk these batteries present. I am able to give
presentations on the best ways to handle, and design safe marine battery energy storage systems,
as far as the current understanding goes, and have written a number or articles for marine professional institutes outlining
the hazards and regulation issues. lithium safety resources.

I can provide consultation on safe installation for marine project managers and design teams involved in the design
of hybrid or full electric propulsion systems or new ship board UPS systems. I also have access to experts involved
in battery safety testing and can help put you in contact with those who can arrange
testing of full scale systems before a design is installed.
